2024 Fantasy Outlook
McCarthy was the fifth of six quarterbacks drafted in the first round this year, but he might be in the best position of all. The Vikings offer a terrific setup with wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back Aaron Jones all playing for coach Kevin O’Connell, who provided 631 pass attempts last year (4th in the league) and 672 the year prior (3rd). The 21-year-old QB may get time to develop, as the Vikings signed Sam Darnold this offseason. At 6-3, 219, McCarthy gets impressive velocity on his throws but still needs to work on his mechanics. While noted for his skill throwing over the middle at Michigan, he was less consistent on passes outside the numbers and had some issues when he needed to throw deep balls with touch. He also wasn’t asked to do much in Michigan’s run-heavy offense, averaging 22.1 pass attempts per game last season for a dominant team. McCarthy is an excellent athlete who ran for 508 yards and eight TDs the past two seasons, and he should provide some rushing stats to boost his fantasy scoring in the NFL. When that will happen is uncertain, as general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said the Vikings don't want to rush McCarthy's development. Once he's under center, the weapons around him and offensive system should make McCarthy a fantasy option in two-QB leagues even if he struggles with accuracy and processing. Read Past Outlooks
Landed by Minnesota with 10th pick
The Vikings selected McCarthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 10th overall.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings moved up from the 11th spot to nab McCarthy, who was almost universally expected to go before fellow quarterback Michael Penix (eighth overall, Atlanta). From that frame this could arguably be a good value for the Vikings. What's less clear is whether McCarthy is immediately prepared to take the starting Minnesota quarterback role from free agent pickup Sam Darnold. McCarthy (6-foot-3, 216 pounds) was extremely successful but largely untested at Michigan, where he averaged only 22.6 pass attempts per game over the last two years. The good news is that McCarthy raked with his otherwise limited pass volume, finishing his Michigan career completing 67.6 percent of his passes at 8.7 yards per pass, with 49 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions. If McCarthy can immediately earn the starting role in Minnesota then it would bode well for his long-term future, and it would also make him an immediate fantasy consideration if only for his enviable group of pass catchers (Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson).

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Comfortable on first day
McCarthy, whom the Vikings selected 10th overall out of Michigan in the 2024 NFL Draft, put together a strong opening practice at the Vikings' rookie minicamp Friday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy threw a few incompletions and one interception during 7-on-7 drills, but he reported feeling very comfortable and not like what would be a typical first day because of the amount of preparation he'd put into studying head coach Kevin O'Connell's system. The rookie signal-caller also raved about the chance to work closely with quarterbacks coach and former NFL player Josh McCown, who offered feedback after nearly every throw in Friday's session.
