Robert Tonyan

30-Year-Old Tight EndTE
Minnesota Vikings
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tonyan burst onto the scene in 2020, developing excellent chemistry with Aaron Rodgers en route to 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns. The tight end regressed with just two touchdowns through eight games in 2021, then missed the second half of that season due to a torn ACL. He bounced back a bit in his final season with the Packers, posting 470 yards (the second-highest total of Tonyan’s career) and two TDs. Tonyan’s production then cratered on the Bears in 2023, as he finished with just 112 yards and no touchdowns as Cole Kmet’s backup. The 30-year-old free agent remains unsigned heading into 2024, and he’s likely to settle for a backup role. Even if injuries or other circumstances clear the path for him to start somewhere, anyone expecting the 2020 Tonyan to reemerge will likely be left disappointed. Read Past Outlooks

Tonyan and the Vikings agreed to terms Thursday on a contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tonyan suited up for all 17 games with the Bears last season, but he secured only 11 of 17 targets for 107 yards. He joins a Minnesota tight end room behind T.J. Hockenson (knee), who isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1 as he works his way back from a serious knee injury. That could give Tonyan the opportunity to compete with Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt for an expanded early season role.

How often does Robert Tonyan run a route when on the field for a pass play?
This data will let you see how Robert Tonyan and the other tight ends for the Vikings are being used. Some tight ends may have a lot of snaps, but they're not that useful for fantasy purposes because they're not actually running routes. This data will help you see when this is the case.

Joins old teammate in Minnesota
TEMinnesota Vikings
May 16, 2024
Tonyan agreed to terms with the Vikings on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end was a bit player during his only year in Chicago in 2023, posting 11 receptions for 112 yards on 17 targets across 17 games. In Minnesota, Tonyan, who has a pair of 50-plus catch seasons in his career, will reunite with one-time Packers teammate Aaron Jones, who signed with the Vikings earlier this offseason.

2019
During the first five years of his career in Green Bay, Tonyan was at his best in 2020, when he caught 52 of 59 targets for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. That was one of the most efficient seasons we've seen from a tight end not named Travis Kelce or George Kittle. Last year, Tonyan's 67 targets were the most he's had in a campaign, which he turned into his second-most productive season (470 yards and two TDs). Now in Chicago, he'll go from being the clear No. 1 option to a backup role behind Cole Kmet. Based on Tonyan's past success, if Kmet misses time, the former could become a fantasy factor.
It wasn't unexpected that Tonyan found it difficult last year to duplicate the tremendous red-zone success he had with Aaron Rodgers in 2020, but it was a knee injury that ruined his season. After 11 TD catches the previous season, seven of which came on 11 red-zone targets, Tonyan naturally regressed to one red-zone TD on six targets last season, with two total in eight games. Unfortunately, a torn ACL in Week 8 robbed him of the chance to turn things around in the second half of the season. Tonyan was on the PUP list until Aug. 15 and thus appears uncertain for Week 1. When he does suit up, he could play a larger role, as the Packers traded top WR Davante Adams and did not re-sign Marquez Valdes- Scantling, and Tonyan has little competition for snaps and targets at tight end with only Josiah Deguara perhaps in the mix.
Despite playing more snaps on special teams than offense through his first two NFL seasons, Tonyan was quick to pounce after Jimmy Graham's departure last spring created an opening in Green Bay. The young tight end scored his first touchdown of 2020 in Week 2, adding another Week 3 and three more Week 4. Tonyan then had a five-game TD drought ... before scoring exactly one in five consecutive games Weeks 11-15. He saw more than five targets in a game only twice all year, making up for it with an 88.1 percent catch rate (first among TEs), 9.9 YPT (third) and 11 TDs (T-1st). Some of the efficiency stats are small-sample outliers - including seven TDs on 11 red-zone targets - but it's also true that Tonyan and QB Aaron Rodgers both played well last year, and the Packers still don't have much else at tight end.
Tonyan caught six more passes last year than he did in 2018 despite playing in five fewer games, but he still never found himself playing more than a complementary role in the Packers offense. He's a good bet to hold onto a roster spot on a team that values tight ends, but if all players at his position are healthy it's tough to see him any higher than fourth on the depth chart.
Tonyan joined the Packers late in the 2017 season, and he showed enough after that to secure a spot on last year's roster coming out of training camp. Other than a 54-yard touchdown in Week 11, Tonyan did not do much, catching just three other passes. He remains in the conversation for 2019, but will be behind veterans Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis and will draw competition from rookie Jace Sternberger. The Packers kept four tight ends on the roster last season, though, and did not add any other veterans, which gives Tonyan a good chance to remain on the roster if four players at his position again make the cut for Week 1.
